The U.S. Department of State funds the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Scholars, which brings scholars from emerging nations to the U.S. for six weeks each summer. Since 2019, Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication hosts an institute on Journalism, Technology, and Democracy. Scholars study topics ranging from media literacy and mis-/disinformation to virtual reality and artificial intelligence, the teaching hospital model of media education, Indigenous communities and the U.S.-Mexico border, the structure of U.S. government institutions and the role of the press in democracy, and much more. During that time they take turns posting about their experiences here in this blog, which documents the learning, personal and professional connections, and cultural impact of the program for its participants.
