The Learning Journey Continues…

With warm body and soul, ignited and enlightened by our beloved facilitators and teachers, the seventeen Cronkite SUSI 2019 participants continued their learning journey on the 3rd day!

Frank Mungeam presents on how to restore trust in news, a piloting of an the innovation of ASU.

It was a day to meet Frank Mungeam, Knight Professor of Practice, TV News Innovation, who demonstrated an innovative model to restore trust in news. This was an innovative story format, “Cronkite News: Full Circle,” piloted by Cronkite News at Arizona State University, that was best summarize by the statement: “Transparency also results in greater accountability.”

Following the Trust in News unit, ASU Ph.D. student Kai Shu showed us key fact-checking initiatives around the U.S. and the world as well as within ASU to combat disinformation.

Fact Checking software is now on the rise to work with news organizations, to significantly increase and improve accountability journalism practices as well as contribute to public debates on the topic. 

The excursion in the latter half of the day to the state’s largest print newspaper, the 129-year-old Arizona Republic, added some variety to the day’s educational activities and programs for the SUSI scholars. There is more to learn over the next four intense weeks of study at the Cronkite School, plus two more weeks of study tour, to enrich ourselves through the experiences of others, design a research project, re-innovate our techniques and our mission of responsibility to humanity. And so the SUSI learning voyage will continue…
